POV: The Chapters
By Erin Colley | Staff writer
As an incoming freshman during 2020, I had no idea what campus life would be like. As classes began with various pandemic restrictions, campus remained still and quiet. To be honest, I thought this was just how Augusta University’s campus was, which over time I came to realize is not the case.
I began to get discouraged wondering how I would get involved on campus when it seemed as though nothing was happening. My mom and sister were both part of Greek life at their colleges and encouraged me to try the same. Despite my hesitancies and doubts about the process, I signed up for recruitment and ended up finding the organization that was the best option for me!
The College Panhellenic Council consists of three sororities for the Augusta University campus: Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi and Zeta Tau Alpha. The recruitment process at AU happens during a weekend in September over three days. With the guidance of recruitment counselors, active members who disaffiliate from their organizations help potential new members (PNMs) through the process, PNMs meet all three sororities through three rounds which include philanthropy, sisterhood, and preference.
During the philanthropy round, chapters share their philanthropy efforts with PNMs and how they support this organization throughout the year. The sisterhood round allows the PNMs to see a glimpse into what each sisterhood consists of with the traditions and events of each chapter. Lastly is the preference round which is more individual to each sorority where they can demonstrate what is important and meaningful to them.
After these rounds is bid day where PNMs can potentially accept a bid to join an organization. Each sorority then has a themed event to welcome all their new members!
As an active member, you participate in philanthropy, sisterhood, social events, chapter retreats and more! There’s always something going on to keep you engaged throughout the semester whether in your respective chapter or all the Panhellenic community!
Through these events, I was able to meet my best friends who have been there for me through all my college experiences. Though my experience started with an unusual campus setting, Greek life allowed me to create memorable experiences and grow my campus involvement.
This past year, I was a recruitment counselor and got to help PNMs find the chapter that was the best fit for them. It was so special to me to guide girls to a place where they can find these friendships and experiences for themselves!
“Greek life is a great way to jumpstart your campus involvement as our organizations not only prioritize their bond of sisterhood, but also getting involved in the community by serving together whether that be a local project or through their respective philanthropies,” stated Roberto Aragon, Assistant Director of Student Affairs.
I’m glad I took a step outside of my comfort zone freshman year to become a part of this community on our campus. As a commuter, this has given me more ways to stay involved on my campus and remain connected! Greek life is one of many ways to get connected at Augusta University!
