Augusta University held a ribbon cutting for the grand opening of its official esports arena on the third floor of the Hull McKnight Building of the Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center on Oct. 23.

Over 300 people packed the Shaffer MacCartney Lobby at the Georgia Cyber Center to celebrate the occasion. Attendants were able to receive free shirts, swag, food and of course, play video games.

Several guest speakers were in attendance, including Provost Neil J. MacKinnon, Executive Vice President for administration Russell Keen, Vice President of enrollment Susan Davies, Associate Vice President for student affairs Colin Stewart and A.B. Osbourne, director of AU’s animation program.

They even played a short video game together after the ribbon cutting.

Stewart said the program began with student interest in gaming, which is important for its success.

“This really is driven by student interest,” he said. “They’re the inspiration for this program. This is how they create connections, build leadership and teamwork.”

He added, “We’re so excited we have this platform where we get to do this.”

The opening of the arena comes as the Jaguars prepare play Kennesaw State University on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 3 p.m. in the Peach Belt Conference championships.

AU student Jordan Moratin, Rocket League coach and team captain, helped AU begin its esports team. He also spoke at the occasion. Moratin said the idea is to foster inclusivity and involve students in a fun, engaging way.

“I wanted to provide students at this university an opportunity to represent our school in aspects other than athletics,” he said.

Students who are interested are encouraged to try out and become involved in the production.
