Jaguars' VB team opens conference play with victory at Georgia College

After seeing its nine-game winning streak end at Shorter, Jaguars’ volleyball rebounded with a conference-opening victory over Georgia College in four sets on Friday, Sept. 24.

AU won the first two sets of the Peach Belt opener at the Centennial Center by scores of 25-15 and 25-19 against the Bobcats. In set three, GC capitalized on AU’s 9 errors, winning the set 25-20. The Jaguars dominated the final set, winning by a score of 25-12 to win the match three sets to one.

Alyssa Frazier and senior Kylie Martin led the Jags with 12 kills each, followed by senior Julie Archer, who finished with 10 kills.

Martin also led on the defensive side with 19 digs. Samantha Zittrauer finished with 24 assists to lead AU. 

AU’s volleyball team had seen its nine game win streak snapped on Wednesday, Sept.22, when it lost to lto Shorter University (8-4, 1-0) at the Winthrop-King Centre in Rome. 

The match was a back-and-forth battle against the Lady Hawks. Shorter won the first set 25-21, but AU battled right back and won 25-22 in set two. 

Set three and four was also a split in sets with Shorter winning the third set 25-22 and AU winning the fourth set 25-23. 

In the final set to 15, the Jaguars had a 9-5 lead, but the Lady Hawks battled back with an 8-1 run and won the set 15-13, giving Shorter the match three sets to two. 

Lacee Glover led the Lady Hawks with 19 kills. Frazier led the Jaguars with 12 kills. Annie Smith led the Lady Hawks with 23 assists, as Zittrauer finished with 20 assists for the Jaguars. 

AU (10-3, 1-0) next heads to Aiken, S.C., to take on conference rival USC Aiken (11-1 ,1-0) on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. The Jaguars will have their first home match Friday, Oct. 1, against Flagler (7-3, 2-0) at Christenberry Fieldhouse at 6 p.m.
