Hurricane Helene's wrath closes AU until Oct. 7

Staff report

Hurricane Helene unleashed a terrible blow to the Augusta area in the early morning hours of Sept. 27, and the administration has closed the university until Monday, Oct. 7.

All classes have been cancelled for this week.

There is limited power on the Health Sciences Campus, but the Summerville Campus is without water and power. The roof of Allgood Hall had several rows of shingles blown off, and the roof of the art studios near Washington Hall had been blown away.

WellStar/MCG hospital has remained open along with the pharmacy.

Cellular service and the internet are generally out all over the ravaged CSRA.

Many trees have fallen on both campus.

The university has power in the Health Sciences Student Center, where students and faculty can work from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. Please bring your ID if you plan to do work in the Student Center.

All weekend athletics had to be postponed, except for the women’s golf team, which was playing in the Windy City Collegiate Classic in Chicago.

The Bell Ringer will have updates, although limited internet access is limiting our ability to publish.

If you have any information that the public needs, please email editor in chief Makenzy Veldboo (KVELDBOOM@augusta.edu].

Trees are down across Arsenal Road at an entrance to Augusta University on the Summerville Campus, blocking any traffic. At the top of the page, a huge pine is among the many trees down on the Summerville Campus. (staff photos)
