In the wake of the damage inflicted on the CRSA by Hurricane Helene, the athletic teams of Augusta University are missing valuable practice time and scheduled competitions due to the current inhabitability of the Augusta area.
The Augusta volleyball team, which has already postponed matches against Flagler College and Lenoir-Rhyne University from the weekend of Sept. 27-28, has announced the additional postponement of matches against USC Aiken, Lander and Catawba, all of which were scheduled to occur on the week of Sept. 30 through Oct. 5.
Furthermore, there was water damage at Christenberry Fieldhouse, meaning repairs would have to be made that may well have an effect on the volleyball team. Christenberry is being renovated this semester.
The men’s golf team, which finished 12th in the Winham Memorial Classic in Chicago on Monday, Sept. 30, will stay in Chicago for the remainder of the week before heading to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Fighting Irish Classic on Sunday, Oct. 7.
The women’s golf team finished 15th in the Windy City Invitational at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill. The tournament features top women’s Division I teams Arizona State, South Carolina and Southern California.
Forest Hills Golf Course, the home of Jaguar golf, sustained serious damage with trees down all over the course. Forest Hills was already closed for months to repair its greens. The AU golf facilty behind Christenberry Fieldhouse sustained damage to its roof, losing several rows of shingles with insulation exposed.
Both the women’s and men’s cross-country teams will continue as scheduled, as they leave on Thursday, Oct. 3 and head to Louisville, Ky., to run in the Louisville Classic.
Individuals on the AU men and women’s tennis teams also did play their ITA Regional matches. this week.
More updates are still to come as relief efforts continue to restore power to the CSRA and resume classes on Augusta University campuses next week.
