Friday, June 14 Dr. Russell T. Keen was named by the USG as Augusta University’s new President.

An email was sent out to all faculty, staff and students, announcing his future presidency and giving a background on Keen’s history with the university and work in higher education.

The email also included a statement from Keen saying, “I truly look forward to serving Augusta University as its next president,” Keen said. “I am excited to expand the focus Augusta University has had on cutting-edge research and innovation. We will prioritize elevating a culture of excellence and creating an unparalleled student experience while promoting critical thinking and student engagement.”

Keen added, “It will be my priority to address Georgia's growing need for highly skilled graduates and a well-educated workforce in vital areas such as health sciences, cybersecurity and education. The impact of Jag Nation is already significant and felt on a global scale. I’m confident that our influence will continue to grow as we navigate this transformative phase at Augusta University.”

Keen began his journey at Augusta University in July 2015, serving as executive vice president for administration and chief of staff to President Keel, who through his retirement will be completing a forty-year career in higher education.

Keen has been working in the USG for over 22 years. Prior to his work with Augusta University, Keen held leadership roles at Georgia Southern University and in fundraising at the University of Georgia. He is also an Augusta area native, growing up attending schools in Columbia County.

Keen’s presidency will be effective July 1, 2024.
