Man who murdered wife outside Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home receives life sentence

Staff report |An Augusta man convicted of murdering his wife outside the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home in February 2018 was sentenced to life in prison on May 16.Richard L. Timmons Jr., 30, shot and killed his wife, Jazna O. Timmons, on Feb. 9, 2018, in the parking lot of the veterans' nursing home.The deceased had told co-workers that she feared for her life. She had filed for divorce several weeks before the shooting.Timmons pleaded guilty of malice homicide, but his plea included that he was mentally ill at the time of the crime, which was captured on security cameras. Jazna Timmons was shot twice and died at the scene, according to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen.In the divorce proceedings, the wife said Timmons was bipolar and suffered from both depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.It took investigators a week searching for Timmons before U.S. Marshals arrested him in Fort Worth, Texas.Jazna Timmons was 34.The Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home is operated by Augusta University and the Georgia Department of Veterans Service.
