By Justin Little |ContributorWhat do you get when you mix the two classic films “Big” and “Superman”? “Shazam!” is the answer.“Shazam!” is the newest film by DC Comics. It is directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer and Mark Strong. It follows 14-year-old Billy Batson as he is chosen by a wizard who bestows upon him powers to turn into a grown-up superhero. With DC’s recent track record of films being extremely underwhelming, “Shazam!” delivers on every scale possible. The film has tremendous amounts of heart and comedy with a perfect balance of superhero action. The screenplay written by Henry Gayden balances these various tones and somehow manages to make it work.Levi shines as the adult Billy Batson. He delivers a fun and lighthearted performance. You can really believe that he is a 14-year-old kid trapped inside of an adult superhero’s body. The performances by the younger cast of Angel and Grazer also stand out. Performances from younger actors are usually hit-or-miss, but these two young performers deliver especially in the more core emotional scenes. The negatives in this film are more or less just nitpicks that can be dismissed easily. The cinematography and original score are serviceable. They’re nothing to write home about. The visual effects are also not the greatest, but this can be overlooked by the general movie-goer. These issues can also be dismissed by the lack of budget, since this film had the lowest budget of any of DC’s past comic book films.Overall, “Shazam!” is an incredibly fun time at the theater, and I highly recommend checking this one out next time you’re at the theater and are looking for a good laugh."Shazam!" is playing at Masters Cinemas. It is rated PG-13 and lasts 132 minutes. Contact Justin Little at JULITTLE@augusta.edu.
