Edited by Leeroy Francis Jr. |Sports editor--->Sports Squad Broadcast #5<---In maybe the biggest basketball victory ever at Augusta University, the AU men's team kicked off their 2018-19 season with an exhibition victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks 77-72 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C., Friday, Oct. 26. Dip Metress' Jaguars were down by three points at halftime (39-36), then saw the Division I Gamecocks jump out to a 58-46 lead with 11:40 to go. That's when Gamecocks' center Chris Silva picked up his fourth foul, and USC Coach Frank Martin had to put him on the bench. AU outscored South Carolina 33-14 the rest of the way for the upset victory. Senior Deane Williams led the Jaguars with 17 points and 13 rebounds despite playing with four fouls the last six-plus minutes. Freshman Tyree Myers from Baltimore, Md., followed with 16 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, including 3-for-3 from the three-point line, and Rafael Monteiro had 15 points.
