Behind Shead’s record final round, Jags finish tied for ninth at Maui Jim Intercollegiate tourney

By Leeroy Francis Jr. |Sports editorThe Augusta University men’s golf team finished in a tie for ninth place at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia State University at Mirabel Golf Course in Scottsdale, Ariz., last weekend (Sept. 21-23).In the strongest field they have played this season so far, featuring teams like Arizona State, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia Tech, LSU, N.C. State, Oregon and Oregon State, the Jags finished in a tie with the Beavers at 7-under-par. That was 21 strokes behind Georgia Tech and Arizona State, which tied after regulation. Georgia Tech won the tournament in a playoff.Coach Jack O'Keefe's Jaguars were in fourth place after round one but dropped down to 10th on the leader board after round two. LSU placed third (-23), N.C. State fourth (-21) and Auburn fifth (-19).Sophomore Alex Shead from Appling shot a 2-under-par round of 68 in the first round for AU, but a second-round 71 dropped him out of the top 10. Then a career low 6-under-par 64 in Sunday’s final round capped Shead's weekend. That included six birdies total, including a stretch of three in a row on holes 14-16. That secured only the fifth 64 in Jaguar history. The other four 64s by Jags came from Broc Everett (2015-16), Jamie Miller (2005-06), Emmett Tuner (2004-05) and Oliver Wilson (2002-03).Junior Gustav Andersson shot 2-under-par 68 in round one and posted a career-low 3-under-par 67 on Saturday and finished in a tie for 35th after a third round 75 (+5). Sophomore Laken Hinton also had a personal best round with a 4-under-par 66 in his first round, eventually finishing in a tie for 39th at (+1). Freshman Alex van Wyk tied for 61st at (+6), shooting even-par 70 in his first two rounds, and Olof Gunnarsson tied for 65th.The AU men’s golf team will tee it up next at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by the University of California-Berkeley, at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif., on Oct. 8-9. The Jaguars had finished 11th in their first outing of the 2018-19 season, at the Northern Illinois Invitational.
