By Jordan Stenger |Senior Staff writerThe Cinema Series is screening the black and white German language film, The Captain, on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.The Captain is a film that will transport its viewers into another time and place. Set in World War II, the film is based on the true story of a German army deserter, Willi Herold, who finds a Nazi Captains uniform. In order to escape the chaos as a deserter in the last few weeks of the war, he puts on the uniform and assumes command as a Nazi Captain.According to the films press kit, The Captain is “simultaneously a historical docudrama and sociological examination with undertones of the absurd, The Captain presents fascism as something of a game to be played by those most gullible and unscrupulous.”The director of the film, Robert Schwentke, said “In order to explain Willi Herold’s actions we have to understand the world he lived in and not just our own world.”This film does exactly that, by transporting viewers to a different world and exploring the story of Willi Herold who after his actions during the last weeks of the war, became known as the executioner of Emsland. The film's trailer can be found here.Contact Jordan Stenger at jstenger@augusta.edufor more information
