Jags' volleyball team defeats Clark Atlanta to get win No. 10

By Ceara Hester |ContributorAugusta University’s volleyball team defeated Clark Atlanta 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 18, improving the Jaguars’ record to 10-2.The match lasted 61 minutes with set scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-10. Augusta’s hitting percentage during the last set was .478 compared to Clark Atlanta’s -.130. With no more than three errors in a set, AU played well and it paid off, according to the Jags' coach, Sharon Quarles.“We didn’t play down to their level. Normally, when we play these kinds of teams and then we lower our skill sets and we play to their level, we are usually upset when we walk away, even though we took the ‘W,'” said Quarles. “But we’re very pleased because we played up to our level, and we did well and we’re happy across the board.”Quarles was also happy to be able to put all her players in and rest some players like McKenzey Beck and Nathalia Gouveia, who only played one set, and Cheryke Brian-Garmos and Alyssa Frazier, who sat out this match. Even though four key players were not on the court, the rest of the Jags did not disappoint.Senior outside hitter Savanna Gonzales led the team with 11 kills and junior outside hitter Karla Rosario was behind her with seven kills. Junior setter Payton Murchie pulled out 17 assists for the home team, while freshman setter Brooklyn Holthaus came out with nine.Junior middle blocker Kim Krutsinger played solid during the match, according to Quarles, who is thankful to have her in the middle and the right side, giving the coach a chance to change up the team’s rotation. Krutsinger added six kills for AU with a kill percentage of .364 after playing in all three sets. She is looking forward to the team’s first conference game on Friday, Sept. 21. Augusta will play Flagler at 7 p.m. at the Christenberry Fieldhouse.“We are finally in conference and our goals are that much closer,” Krutsinger said. “It will be a great match. Flagler is a tough one and that makes for a fun game. We are looking forward to bringing our ‘A’ game this Friday.”
