By Leeroy Francis Jr. |Sports editorThe Augusta University men’s golf team finished tied for 11th place to start its 2018-19 campaign at the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Ill.In their first tournament since the 2018 NCAA Division I National Championship in Stillwater, Okla., in May and without reigning NCAA individual champion Broc Everett, who graduated with an MBA, the Jags finished in a tie with the University of Wisconsin at 31 over par. That was 21 strokes behind winner Marquette University.Gustav Andersson finished in a tie for 12th overall at 3 over par to lead the Jaguars. He shot a 2-under 70 in round three to tie for AU's lowest round of the weekend.The Jaguars were in third place at 3-over-par after round one, but dropped down the leaderboard on the 36-hole final day. Marquette edged Notre Dame by one stroke to win at 10 over par. Notre Dame finished second at 11 over, followed by Missouri (+15), Ohio State (+17), Coastal Carolina (+22) and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (+22).The Jaguars started their new season with five of the six starters who competed in May’s NCAA National Championship. These included returning sophomores Alex Shead, Laken Hinton and Olof Gunnarsson and juniors Andersson and McCullough Pickens. Incoming freshman Alex van Wyk from George, South Africa, competed as an individual.Shead shot a 2-under round the first day, but a second-round 78 (+6) dropped him out of the top-10. He eventually finished in a tie for 16th.Hinton finished tied for 50th (+13), while Gunnarsson (T68, +17) and Pickens (T74, +20).An Edmond, Okla., product, Hinton gave the Jaguars their first hole-in-one of the season when he aced the par-3, 200-yard third hole in Saturday's first round.In his first collegiate tourney, van Wyk tied for 44th individually after rounds of 70 (-2), 79 (+7) and 78 (+6) to finish at 227 (+11).The Jaguars return to action at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate Hosted by Georgia State Sept. 21-23 in Scottsdale, Ariz., at Mirabel Golf Club.
