Jags struggle in Stillwater during first round of NCAA championships

The Jaguars as a team shot 300 and dropped to 30th place in the tournament at Oklahoma State. Texas Tech moved into first place after 36 holes, followed by host OSU and then Alabama. Duke and Oklahoma are tied for fourth. The third round is Sunday, May 27. AU tees off at 1:50 p.m. CST.The Augusta University men’s golf team were in 28th place with a combined score of 298 at 10 over par after round one of the NCAA Division I Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.Senior Broc Everett opened with a 70 at 2 under-] par to lead all Jags. Everett entered Saturday in a tie for 13th out of 156. He was three shots off of the lead after round one.“It’s a fair course, but it’s obviously demanding so if you keep it in play off the tee and with your second shot, you can have a really good round," he said. "I kept it in play and just kept plugging along and didn’t do anything too special. It was a solid showing and I’m excited for the rest of the week. It’s going to be fun.”Sophomore Gustav Andersson is in a tie for 61st after a first-round 73, which was four shots better than freshman Olof Gunnarsson, who shot an opening round 77. Freshman Laken Hinton recorded a  78 and was sitting in a tie for 135th. Freshman Alex Shead, who won the individual title at the MEAC Conference Championship, finished in a tie for 144th with a 79.The par-72, 7,460-yard Karsten Creek Golf Club played long and slightly wet with the various rain delays throughout the day.“It was a really long start this morning with the weather delays and always trying to guess when you’re going off,” Everett said. “I think I warmed up about three different times today and that was very interesting. Once we got out there the course was in pretty good shape. It was wet obviously, but not terrible. The greens were still good. They got a little chewed up at the end of the day because it was so wet.”University of Las Vegas’s Shintaro Ban, Northwestern’s Ryan Lumsden and Clemson’s Bryson Nimmer all shot 67s to lead the men’s stroke play after round one.Northwestern was in first place in the team competition after the first day of play. The Wildcats were at 8 under par. Texas Tech was second, four shots off the pace. Oklahoma was third and Clemson fourth.Augusta is only the second 12th seed ever from a regional to advance to the NCAA Championships. The Jaguars recorded their lowest score in a regional with a final-round 270 at the NCAA Raleigh Regional on May 16 and placed fourth place to qualify for the NCAA finals.Augusta is making its 13th appearance in the NCAA Championships (1993, '94, '95, '98, '99, '01, '02, '03, '05, '08, '10, '11, and '18).The 30-team field will play three days of stroke play and the top 15 teams after the first three rounds stroke play advance to a fourth day of stroke play. The top eight teams from there qualify for two days of match play.The Jags are paired with Iowa State and UCF for the first and second rounds on the par-72, 7,460-yard course. Augusta is seeded 30th out of the 30 total teams at the nationals and tees off a2:10 p.m. (CST) on Saturday for round two.
