The Freedom Dance Club at Augusta University may not be on everyone’s radar, but one student's vision and passion are hoping to change that.
Samantha Reece is the president of the dance club. Having previous dance experience from her sorority, she decided to create a club for her passion about a year back with a group of girls.
“The dance team stands for inclusiveness, diversity and kindness. To be a part of it is to be a part of a new group of people that stand for acceptance,” Reece said.
The most beautiful thing about the dance club is what it represents – opportunity and hope. The creation of this club shows us as a community that if you are passionate enough about something, you can turn your dreams into a reality.
“We created a dance organization to provide an outlet for adults to continue dancing,” said Reece. “My favorite thing about being a part of this club is attempting to create a new vision for society.”
The club gets together about three times a week to practice and have some fun. They recently performed at the Doc’s Porchside restaurant and at the Miss AU ceremony.
“Dancing, for me, feels like home. I love it because I feel like I was born with not only a passion but a need to dance,” Reece said. “I truly believe that dance is my purpose in life.
”According to chartwell.com, “Dancing boosts physical and mental health by helping prevent falls, improve posture and flexibility, lift mood and ease anxiety. It is also a fun activity to sharpen the mind while increasing aerobic power and strength, building social bonds, and reducing pain and stiffness.”
