Tailgate culture gains momentum at Augusta University

Last Saturday, the fraternity Pi Kappa Phi hosted a tailgate outside Christenberry Fieldhouse before the Augusta Jaguars faced the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes in a late-night basketball matchup. The event featured yard games, grilling, and a viewing of UFC fights, drawing a strong turnout, including students from other campus organizations.
Students at the tailgate expressed enthusiasm for more events like it. Omari Matthew, Lead Mentor for the African American Male Initiative, shared his thoughts.
“I think the tailgate was really good, and I think it was a great idea to have it right in front of Christenberry before the basketball game,” Matthew said. “Pi Kappa Phi was really hospitable to everyone who attended. I would love to see more tailgating at Augusta University sports events in the near future.”
Tailgating has not traditionally been a prominent activity at Augusta University, outside of homecoming week. However, Pi Kappa Phi is working to encourage students to gather, have fun, and show support for the Jaguars. While tailgate culture is typically more significant at larger universities, efforts to foster similar traditions at a smaller school like Augusta could have unique benefits. With a more tight-knit campus community, tailgates offer opportunities to build stronger relationships and enhance social connections.
Alex Doan, a member of Pi Kappa Phi, emphasized the importance of growing tailgate culture.
“I would really like to step up tailgate culture by getting more people out there before games to help bring together everyone who loves the spirit of AU and what it stands for, like Jaguar Pride,” Doan said. “By expanding tailgates, we can create closer connections and show support for athletics. The school does so much for us that it’s only right to show up and support the teams.”
Augusta University students and organizations have an opportunity to build a more vibrant pregame culture. Events like this tailgate demonstrate how student-led initiatives can enhance school spirit and foster a greater sense of community.
