Southern Cities Swing Tour prepares students for life after college

Have you ever worried about where to live or work after college? Have you thought, "How do I network?" or "Where can I practice?" Many students share these concerns as they approach graduation, questioning how to navigate the transition into the next stage of life.
The Southern Cities Swing Tour (SCST) offers a solution. Designed for juniors and seniors preparing to enter the workforce or graduate school, the SCST is a one-day trip that provides invaluable resources and connections. This year’s tours include trips to Greenville, South Carolina, on Friday, March 14, and Charlotte, North Carolina, on Friday, March 28.
“Participants explore resources and connect with young professionals and AU alumni who live and work in cities about two and a half hours from Augusta,” said Angelica Hill, first- and second-year experience coordinator. “We partner with the Chamber of Commerce or a regional business alliance to introduce students to professionals in those cities. During a panel discussion, students can ask about career options, advanced education opportunities, community life, and the overall vibe of the city.”
After the panel, students attend a networking lunch where they can have casual conversations with professionals and alumni. Hill noted, “All students receive a free set of business cards, which they can exchange with their new connections. Finally, students have the chance to explore the city in small groups.”
The SCST, created by AU students who wanted to prepare for life beyond college, has been a resounding success in helping participants feel more confident and prepared to take their next steps.
“It was very influential in helping me decide to move to the city,” said Justin Goddard, an AU alum who participated in the first SCST. “I learned what industries are prominent in a particular city and had the chance to network.”
Kimberly Kelly, another AU graduate and SCST participant, found her current job through the experience. “I connected with someone on the trip who told me about an internship with the city. The rest is history,” Kelly said.
Both Goddard and Kelly highlighted the free time provided to explore the city as a favorite part of the tour. “We explored aspects like apartment tours, food, and city-wide events,” Goddard said.
Elizabeth Huggins, Ed.D., director of first- and second-year experiences and the certificate of leadership program at Augusta University, emphasized the importance of the tour. “Finding a job is not the only thing students should consider when leaving our university. They also need to feel emotionally and socially ready for this experience. They need to feel a sense of competence. If students are asking for help in transitioning out of college, we are here to support them.”
One participant summed up their experience by saying, “I thoroughly enjoyed the presentations and the transparency of everyone who spoke with us. I actually got internship offers! Being confident that wherever you move, there is a place for you, is invaluable.”
