Starting point guard Chris Britt leaves AU program

The AU men’s basketball team lost its starting point guard last week when Chris Britt left the program on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

The sophomore from Gastonia, N.C., was a major part of this team because of his talent but also his experience. He played in 26 of 33 games in the 2022-23 season, while averaging four points per game coming off the bench for the Jaguars.

AU men’s basketball coach Dip Metress stated Britt’s reasoning for leaving the program was, “he no longer wanted to play basketball and he was going to pursue other interests.”

This is a big loss for the Jaguars, who were already young at the position with sophomore Carson Seemann running some point and freshmen Zyere Edwards and John St. Germain III backing up Britt.

“He could make a shot and was groomed to be the starting point guard throughout last year,” said Metress about what Britt’s loss means to the team.

The Jaguars, without Britt, picked up two wins over Mount Olive and Barton.

“When something like this happens, you don’t like it, but you’ve just got to move on,” Metress said. “You have these other 13 guys to focus on, and our guys responded well this weekend.”

The point guard position totaled 23 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds in the games combined this weekend.
