Sand Sharks down Jaguars 114-112 in PBC opener

Despite shooting 62 percent from the field and getting 30 points from veterans Ja’Queze Kirby and 27 from David Viti, Augusta University lost its Peach Belt Conference opener to USC Beaufort 114-112 at the USCB Recreation Center on Jan. 3.

The Jaguars (0-1, 7-4) trailed 61-55 at halftime of the game in Bluffton, S.C., but they rallied to build a four-point lead with eight minutes to play on a Viti drive to the basket. However, the Sand Sharks (1-0, 8-1) went on a 21-15 run to close out the narrow victory.

AU also shot 80 percent from the line, but USCB won it with its 3-point shooting. The Sand Sharks were 14 of 27 from behind the arc, compared to a 4-of-14 night for the Jaguars.

Larry Bullock led the Sand Sharks with 26 points, followed by Marcus Overstreet with 21. Bullock was 7of 9 on 3-point attempts.

Freshman point guard Zyere Edwards added 15 for the Jags, who committed 24 turnovers—compared to 20 for the host team.

Augusta will play at Columbus State on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 3:30 p.m.
