The Augusta chapters of Alpha Delta Pi and Zeta Tau Alpha squared off Thursday, Nov. 18, in a classic game of flag football that was organized by Pi Kappa Phi.
Pi Kappa Phi charged four dollars per person for admission to this game with all of the proceeds being donated to The Ability Experience which is a charity that provides support for disabled children.
According to Pi Kappa Phi philanthropy chair Dylan Kraft, the game was organized by the “Nu” rush class of the fraternity as their capstone project.
“We have a new rush class every semester, and near the end of the process, we have all of the members of that rush class work together on a project to raise money for charity. The Nu class decided on a powderpuff football game which turned out to be a huge success as we raised over 400 dollars for The Ability Experience,” Kraft said.
The game was held at the intramural sports field on the Health Science Campus with the same rules and regulations as an intramural flag football game. It consisted of two 20-minute halves and both teams were able to make substitutions as they pleased.
Alpha Delta Pi jumped off to an early 12-0 lead after scoring on both of its first two possessions. They continued their dominance until halftime where they had extended their lead to 24-0.
In the second half, it seemed as though Zeta Tau Alpha was going to make a comeback as they got two consecutive stops on defense and were able to put together a scoring drive to cut the deficit down to 18.
The comeback effort seemed to be short lived however as Alpha Delta Pi was able to get the ball in the endzone for yet another touchdown making the score 30-6. With a flurry of defensive stops for both teams coming late in the second half, the game ended 30-6 with Alpha Delta Pi taking home the win.
After the game, Alpha Delta Pi quarterback Emily Hollis said, “Obviously I’m happy that we were able to win, but this whole game was so much fun, and honestly, I would’ve been happy with it going either way.”
It was clear that both sides had a lot of fun with the game as the two opposing teams showed nothing but smiles after it was over.
“I know that we lost, but I can’t be upset about that because of how much fun this was. The guys really went all out putting this game on for us with the refs and the cheerleaders, and they raised a lot of money in the process. It was really a win for everyone in my book,” said Zeta Tau Alpha player Liah Hartman.
It is clear that, overall, the powderpuff football game was a huge success seeing that both sides had quite a lot of fun and raised money for charity in the process. Pi Kappa Phi president Alex Rountree even hinted at holding another powderpuff game next year.
“This worked out too well for everyone involved not to do it again soon,” he said.
