The Augusta University Cinema Series, run by professor Matthew Buzzell, is one of the many fun activities on campus that are free for AU students and faculty, as well as the general public.

“I really enjoyed the film selection. This was my first time seeing the Cinema Series, and now I can’t wait for the next one,” said a junior at AU.

Some of the films shown this semester included “Ailey,” “Cryptozoo,” “Gunda” and “Sweet Thing.”

Cinema Series showings take place one day a month, primarily Thursdays, at the Maxwell Theatre. For convenience, there are two showtimes available to watch each film. The first is at 1:00 p.m. and the second is at 7:00 p.m.

The Cinema Series has been around since the 1970s. At this time, AU was still Augusta College, and it offered Monday night film screenings to the community.

“My parents would attend those screenings and sometimes bring me along. Later in the 1980s, I began faithfully attending screenings on my own,” said Buzzell.

As the years have passed, the Cinema Series continues to include international productions chosen from film festivals and cinema publications in the lineup of premieres.

With the looming threat of COVID-19, Buzzell remains hopeful that the attendance numbers will increase to the capacity they once were. While there is no plan in place for virtual screenings in the event of another closure, Buzzell promotes the notion that the Maxwell is well-suited for social distanced seating.
