Jaguar volleyball team defeats Bearcats for fifth straight win

The Augusta University volleyball team beat the Bearcats of Georgia College on Saturday, March 27, as the Jaguars picked up their fifth straight win.

The Jaguars were dominant in this contest as they finished the match in three sets with a clean sweep over the Bearcats by scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-19.

For the Jaguars, Kylie Martin led the team in kills with 13 while team captain Chloe Allen contributed nine kills. Samantha Zittrauer and Brooklyn Holthaus were the facilitators for the Jaguars in this contest as they posted 22 and 17 assists, respectively.

“I felt that the team’s performance against Georgia College was a strong one,” Holthaus said. “Each game and each practice is preparing us to reach the goals that we have as a team.”

Holthaus preached the success the Jaguars are seeing is due large in part to excellent team chemistry and that their wins are because of team efforts and not individual efforts.

These ideals were further supported when Holthaus was asked about what is leading to the hot streak the Jaguars are currently on.

“We are currently on a five-game winning streak,” Holthaus said. “Our hard work, perseverance, and team cohesiveness is putting us in a good position to continue working towards achieving great things.”

It’s this team-oriented mindset that makes the Jaguars such a dangerous team. Team chemistry such as this is perhaps the most important aspect of a team’s success in team sports, and the Jaguars are all on the same page when it comes to success.

The Jaguars will look to extend their winning streak to six games on Friday, April 2, as they will host the Braves of UNC Pembroke at Christinberry Fieldhouse at 6 p.m.

“We unfortunately lost our first game to the Braves, but we used it to learn and grow stronger from individually and collectively,” Holthaus said. “The team is stronger now and continues getting stronger each day. If we continue working hard and preparing the way we have been, I am confident that we will perform well against the Braves.”

Despite a loss to the Braves earlier in the season, the Jaguars are playing strong heading into this matchup and will look to avenge their last meeting UNC Pembroke.

AU currently stands in second place behind Flagler in the Peach Belt. UNC Pembroke is in fourth place.
