Augusta native April Henry graduated Summa Cum Laude as a Communications major from Augusta University, which was known then by the name Georgia Regents University in 2016. With aspirations of having a career in psychological therapy, Henry never anticipated her life today as one of Augusta’s most loved muralists.

“I actually did not ever anticipate that I would be an artist. I loved to create things and do-little crafts, but I never thought it could be a career. I have always been a deep thinker and found Psychology very, very interesting. I wanted to be a therapist because I love to listen and help people,” shared Henry.

Though Henry’s career path took a drastic turn, her interest in painting and creating was sparked by an even fortuitous occurrence—acting class.

“I would have to say an acting class I took with Professor Matthew Buzzell that completely took me out of my comfort zone. We did so many exercises that terrified me but made me truly believe in myself by the end,” Henry said.

Henry shared that she accidentally stumbled across her talent to both paint and create murals.

“If no one had asked me to paint their pet years and years ago I would have never known I could paint—ever,” she said.

Henry reflected on herself in adolescence, which seemed to foreshadow her work today.

“I loved making things beautiful, no matter what it was, I had to turn it into a masterpiece,” Henry explained.

Today, some of Henry’s works are displayed on buildings including the SnoCap diner in North Augusta, the Southern Salad in downtown Augusta, Savannah River Brewing in downtown Augusta, SRP park in North Augusta, and even the streets of downtown Aiken.

Henry shared her advice to those with big dreams of their own.

“Say yes in the beginning to almost every opportunity so in the future you can position yourself to say no.”
