Freshman Gareth Steyn led the Augusta University men’s golf team as he shot a two-under 68 on the par-70, 7,115-yard Mirabel layout in the Maui Jim Invitational collegiate golf tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Steyn shot 33 (three-under) on the front nine and shot 36 (one-over) on the back nine. Steyn is now tied for 49thin the tournament on the individual leaderboard.
AU junior Viktor Lindgren followed Steyn for AU with a score of 2 over par, followed by sophomore Jack Vajda (+7), sophomore Hampus Wijkstrom (+8) and sophomore Dawson Booth (+12).
Georgia Tech still finds one of its players at the top of the individual leaderboard as sophomore Christo Lamprecht had a 7-under-par performance with an overall score of 12 under par for the tournament. The 6-foot-8 Lamprecht, a native of South Africa, has sole possession of the lead with one day remaining.
All five of Coach Jack O’Keefe’s players improved from the opening day as the Jaguars had another chance to map out the course and find new ways to attack and turn in lower scores. The largest improvement on the team came from Wijkstrom as he went from an eight-over-par round in round one to an even par (70) round two.
Saturday’s format for the tournament had all five of AU’s players paired in a group with tournament individuals from different schools.
The Jaguars find themselves still in 14th place on the team leaderboard with a combined score of 17 over par.
Georgia Tech leads the tournament with a combined score of 34 under par.
Sunday is the final day for Jaguars to make some noise in Scottsdale as the team finishes its first tournament of the fall.
