Did you know AU has esports teams?

When starting a new semester at college, there is no shortage of things to do. Greek life, clubs, and athletics are all viable options. However, AU has something new and unique: esports.
Established in 2022, the AU esports program has seen unprecedented growth in the past two years. Now they are looking to expand even further in 2024. Augusta University Esports General Manager Noah Bowers expressed his excitement when asked about the upcoming season.
“Over the summer we had several meetings to establish our goals for the semester, which includes putting a new policy manual forward for the program soon”, said Bowers.
The esports program communicates mostly through Discord, where announcements about tryouts and student interests will be made.
“We’re having our first round of tryouts on the weekend of August 23rd through the 25th. They should run from 6:00 PM to about 10:00 PM, depending on the coaches and managers for each team,” said Bowers.
This semester’s varsity teams will include Rocket League, Valorant, League of Legends, Overwatch 2, Counter-Strike 2 and Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Unofficial club teams are also being considered for Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Rainbow Six Siege.
Last semester AU’s varsity League of Legends team won the Peach Belt Conference championship, and Bowers is hungry for more success this fall.
“Our Rocket League team in particular is looking solid. I’m really excited to see what those guys do,” said Bowers.
