Cincinnati’s MacKinnon named AU’s provost and vice president of academic affairs

After extensive interviews with the three final provost candidates, Augusta University (AU) has named Neil J. MacKinnon has the new provost and vice president of academic affairs starting Jan. 19, 2021.

MacKinnon is the current dean of the James L Winkle College Pharmacy at University of Cincinnati, where he has served since 2013. He created nine new graduate certificates/degrees.

Under MacKinnon’s supervision, the college received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award (HEED) in 2018, 2019 and 2020; the only pharmacy school to win those three years.

MacKinnon will collaborate with his collogues to continue AU President Brooks Keel’s vision of expanding AU as a research university with the only public medical college in Georgia.

The Cincinnati dean replaced Gretchen Caughman, who retired at the end of August. Zach Kelehear is serving as interim provost. Caughman worked at AU for 35 years.

A Canadian, MacKinnon had been a professor at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona before he went to the University of Cincinnati.

MacKinnon received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida. He earned his pharmacy degree from Dalhousie University in Canada and completed the M.S./administrative hospital pharmacy residency program at the University of Wisconsin.
