AU's music department's MusiCon

Augusta, home of the godfather of soul himself James Brown, is no stranger to good music. Downtown Augusta has plenty of venues to enjoy local tunes, but on Wednesday Sept. 25, you can simply walk outside Maxwell Theatre to hear sweet sounds from talented students.
The Augusta University Department of Music’s 2nd MusiCon will take place on the portico of Maxwell Theatre from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Student ensembles will be showcased including jazz, opera, choir and much more.
Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Isaac Brinberg says the event is meant for students to show off their talent to their fellow student body and the community.
“This is a chance to showcase our students’ great talent and hard work, and for our students in ensembles and chamber groups to get to perform in public in front of faculty and students but also the community at large,” said Brinberg.
Between sets, attendees can enjoy food from Luna Pizza, lawn games and even a DJ.
“From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. you’ll hear a whole variety of music including our orchestra, our jazz ensemble, a great flute-guitar duet in a student chamber group, the wind ensemble, opera singers, a brass ensemble and our choir will sing,” said Brinberg.
Ensemble groups are not restricted to music students, and a lot of students from other departments will be performing at MusiCon as well.
“Student ensembles are open to anyone,” said Brinberg. “A lot of people who come to AU may have a music background and may not be aware that there are outlets for that. It’s a fun way to continue to make music.”
Student ensembles can also be a good way to alleviate some of the pressures of college life. Anyone with an interest in music can try out.
“Students can sign up every semester. We had a computer science student last year who loved being in band because it was time away from a screen, so for a lot of students it’s stress relief,” said Brinberg.
Interested AU students can go to the music department’s website and view all the student ensembles, then reach out to that ensemble’s director for more information. Registration for Spring 2025 will begin in October.
