Augusta University names new Study Abroad director

Augusta University's new Study Abroad program director Katherine Grego is excited to bring something new to AU and to strengthen and revitalize the program after a hard hit from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I realized quickly that there is such a strong foundation for study abroad/study away here while the administration is also eager to revitalize what is offered,” said Grego. “At [Columbus State University], we won two national awards (AACSU in 2019 and NAFSA Paul Simon in 2014) for campus internationalization. I plan to bring some aspects from my previous roles to AU depending on the needs of the culture here.”
Grego, previously at CSU, took part in multiple roles there. She was the American Cross-Cultural Experience Program Coordinator, the Study Abroad Coordinator and the International Education Coordinator.
“I was eager to make the transition to Augusta University for various reasons. First, my background is in STEM; so, I was looking forward to working with students in similar fields of study and especially in collaboration with the medical college,” said Grego.
Grego said students should sign up as early as possible. The Study Abroad program will fill up quickly, especially with the new and exciting trips they have planned for in the future.
“Sign up early! Spaces on our programs are limited and on a first come, first serve basis, and we have a lot of interest in both study abroad and study away this year. You don't want to miss taking an engaging class that you need for graduation,” she said.
Important things kicked off on Oct. 26. Grego held a GRIT (Growing Resilience into Tomorrow) workshop in University Hall 331 to help first-and second-year experiences.
Grego also wants students to know all about the Study Abroad Scholarship deadline.
“December 11, 2021, is the Office of Study Abroad Scholarship deadline, and I encourage everyone who is signing up for 2022 programs to apply,” said Grego.
COVID-19 has introduced new challenges to all college and universities, not only with classes but with the other programs, like Study Abroad. However, Grego tells us that AU is doing what they can to ensure that students are kept safe.
“Augusta University will not allow a program to run if the location is deemed unsafe for travel after a thorough review process. Also, the University System of Georgia strongly encourages all study abroad/away participants to be fully vaccinated by the time their program travels,” said Grego.
