AU women get 67-50 victory over Livingstone; Jaguar men suffer first loss

The Augusta University women’s basketball team defeated Livingstone College on Saturday, Dec. 3, downing the Blue Bears 67-50 at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The first quarter was close with Augusta only leading 15-13 at the end of the period. Both teams shot 50 percent from the free throw line, but AU had a higher field-goal percentage at 41 percent, compared to 37 percent for Livingstone.

Augusta pushed its lead to 38-30 by halftime, as the second quarter found the Jaguars shooting their highest field goal percentage of the game at 57 percent.

In the third quarter, AU (6-1) outscored the Blue Bears 14-7, and, in the final period, Augusta held a 15-13 edge to earn the 17-point victory.

Senior Kennedi Manning and junior Tomiyah Alford shared the lead for most points scored with a total of 19 each. Manning was the leading rebounder for AU with 14. Alford had 11 rebounds, 4 assists and made 9 of 12 from the line.

Samiyah Briggs led Livingstone (3-4) with 11 points.

The Jaguars dominated the boards, outrebounding the Blue Bears 57-25.

Alford was named Peach Belt Conference player of the week. She averaged 17.5 points and 8 rebounds in AU’s two wins during the week. Alford, a junior guard from Barnesville, had scored 16 points with 5 rebounds in the 62-48 win at Claflin on Dec. 1.

In men’s action, the Jaguars suffered their first loss of the season, losing at Virginia Union 83-62.

The Panthers were paced by Raemaad Wright, who led all scorers with 34 points. Miguel Arnold led Augusta (5-1) with 17 points.

For the Jaguars, David Viti added 12 points, Tyshaun Crawford added 11 points and 9 rebounds, and Darren Lucas-White chipped in 10 points and 6 assists.

Virginia Union (7-1) shot 53 percent from the field, compared to 44 percent for AU. The Panthers shot 50 percent from the three-point line, compared to 33 percent for the Jaguars.

Ja’Queze Kirby, nursing an ankle injury, played only three minutes for Augusta, which entered the game ranked second in NCAA Division II. Union was ranked 20th.

Up next, the Jaguar men will host Bowie State on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m. for Education Day.

Then, in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, the Jaguar women will host Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 1:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The AU men will play GSWU at 3:30 p.m., also at home.
