Augusta University’s Libraries and Civic Engagement have teamed up to host a reading of the U.S. Constitution in recognition of Constitution Day on Friday, Sept. 17 at the Summerville Campus amphitheater from noon to 2 p.m.

AU students and faculty will participate in the reading. Refreshments and patriotic-themed gifts are expected to be available at the event as well as voter registration information for students.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, educational institutions who receive federal funding are required to host an educational program for students to be informed about the U.S. Constitution.

David Kearns, senior assistant of the Reese Library, explained a brief history of the how the Constitution came about, which occurred when delegates met in the summer of 1787 in Philadelphia with hopes to strengthen the government after noticing weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation.

“It is literally an anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution,” he said.

Kearns mentioned that everyone can participate in acknowledging the importance of the Constitution.

“There is an opportunity for anyone, no matter their major or their profession to be engaged,” he said.

This Friday will mark the 234th year since the document was signed in 1787. The day continues to be remembered not only as Constitution Day, but now Citizenship Day as well. Kearns said that not only is it a celebration, but a way to let the public know how significant the document is to them.

“What we are trying to achieve with Constitution Day is demystify the Constitution – let people understand this is a document that effects them everyday,” he said.
