The Augusta University men's golf team had a solid start to the season by finishing seventh at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills Golf Course.
This helped the Jaguars to prepare for the JT Poston Invitational, to be played at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Sapphire, N.C. That tournament is slated for Sept. 25-26.
In the Wisconsin tournament, Jaguar sophomore Stefan Jacobs tied for eighth place. As a team, Augusta finished seventh out of 12 teams in the field.
AU Coach Steven Paine expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance and hopes that Jaguars continue playing well.
“We are pleased to see how all five guys competed and battled through the three days in a championship setting,” said Paine.
The five players who competed were Stefan Jacobs, Cole Stevens, Behn Heyns, Ryan van der Klis and Chapman Barnett. Cole Stevens placed sixteenth, while Behn Heyns and Ryan van der Klis tied for forty-third, and Chapman Barnett tied for fifty-fifth.
“We put ourselves in a great position going into the final round and learned what it will take to ultimately finish where we want at the end of tournaments and the season,” Paine added.
The Jags had a strong start, and they hope to continue to perform well in upcoming tournaments, starting with the Sapphire Valley event next week.
Paine expressed his satisfaction with sophomore Jacobs and hopes that his performance in the tournament only gets better throughout the season.
“Stefan going out and playing some solid golf really helps his confidence and standard moving forward,” says Paine.
