Ask the experts: How can students make sure they are learning what they need to be successful?

Augusta University has entered its second month of school as students are finally getting back used to the fast-paced college life.
Students love that they are able to achieve their dreams, thanks to AU. However, some students aren’t convinced that they are learning the proper tools in order to succeed in their future careers. This ultimately leads us to our question of the week.
How can students make sure that they are learning what they need to be successful before they graduate and move on to their careers?
Rachel Yost, an academic advisor at AU, gives us her insight on this schoolwide worry. Yost emphasizes the importance of students having that hunger to succeed. Even though the faculty and staff do play a major role, you also have to want to do more outside of the classroom as well.
“It’s not just on the professor to prepare you for graduation and for your future job,” said Yost.
She highlights how even though the teachers and staff are there to help, you as a student have to take that extra step to ensure your own careers.
“It’s your responsibility to go outside of the classroom and do internships, leverage our resources like career services to help prepare you for what’s to come after graduation,” said Yost.
The Academic Advisement Center at AU helps students cross that bridge between the books that you read for class and the skills that you need to gain outside of class.
“Sometimes it’s nice to things like getting involved in a club, having some sort of a leadership role outside of the classroom to help add on some of those things you are learning in the classroom,” said Yost.
These things will ultimately help you become that star student and star boss or employee that you have dreamed of since you started college. The end is closer than you think, so make sure to utilize all of your available resources such as the Academic Advisement Center.
The Academic Advisement Center are just an email or a short walk away on the second floor of University Hall if any student ever feels like they need more assistance. They can help with anyone based off of your personal needs. Just reach out to your academic advisor.
Students should remember that grades are super important towards getting that degree. However, the connections that you make inside and outside that classroom will also play a huge roll in whatever direction life takes you after graduation.
All in all, if you put in the work, you all will go on to do amazing things.
