By Charles Cates |ContributorAugusta University (AU) welcomes Daniel Roberts for his 2018 Leadership Lecture at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1 on the Summerville Campus.The event, titled “College to Capitol: Using What You Learn Outside the Classroom to Land Your Dream Job”, will take place in University Hall Room 170 and is open to the public.Augusta Mayor Hardie Davis Jr. will introduce Roberts. There will also be a reception with refreshments following the lecture.The AU Office of Student Life and Engagement, Pamplin College, Department of Social Sciences and the Department of Communication are sponsoring the event.“We are excited to have Daniel Roberts on campus,” Director of Student Engagement at Augusta University, Joe Pierce, said. “He will offer our students a perspective that has been shaped through many identities: millennial, African American and LGBTQ+ community member, among others. To have this level of diversity and achievement in one of our leadership speakers will be inspiring for our students. His student leadership in college, work at the Obama White House and continued career in communications in New York guarantee that everyone will get something out of his talks.”Dr. Martha Ginn of the Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences believes that students will benefit from hearing Roberts’ talk.“I think students can expect to learn how important internships are in your college experience, but also in shaping your future career goals,” said Assistant Dean Ginn, who is one of the event’s organizers.After starting his career in Washington, D.C., Roberts moved to New York and became an account executive at Edleman’s New York Corporate and Public Affairs practice. Now, he works for Viacom as a communications manager. He has extensive practice running media events, and has worked with celebrities like actress Angela Bassett and singer John Legend.Roberts previously worked on Legislative Affairs and Communications at the White House. After obtaining his B.A. in Public Policy Leadership from the University of Mississippi, he began his career as a White House intern for Michelle Obama, and then as a legislative correspondent for the U.S. Representative Elijah E. Cummings. Roberts also worked in Legislative Affairs and Communications at the White House.Roberts will also speak at the Leadership Luncheon on Friday, Feb. 2 at noon in the Jaguar Student Activates Center.
