Jags seek fourth straight win as they return home after victorious road trip

By Leeroy Francis |Staff writerThe Augusta University men’s basketball team returns home Wed., Jan. 31 after beating the University of South Carolina-Aiken and Lander University on the road last week.The men played very well on the road and improved to 8-5 in the Peach Belt Conference and 11-8 overall. They finished the road series with a victory over Lander University 79-55 on Sat., Jan. 27 when five Augusta players scored in double digits. This came after two convincing victories, at home over Georgia Southwestern by an 87-69 score on Jan. 20 and at USC-Aiken 95-79 on Jan. 24.The men are in tournament mode working well together during the last few games. At Lander, senior forward Tamyrik Fields of Augusta led the team with 16 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Aaron Byrd, a junior guard from Washington D.C., added 14 points. Forward Deane Williams, also played well at Lander, shooting 5 for 6 from the field totaling 12 points for the game.The men, now alone in third place in the league behind leader UNC-Pembroke and second-place Clayton State, host Flagler on Wed. Jan. 31. Earlier this season, the Jags beat Flagler 89-80 on Jan. 3 in St. Augustine, Fla.Game time for the Jan. 31 contest is 7:30 p.m. at Christenberry Fieldhouse.The Jaguar women’s basketball team, with a 1-12 in conference record and 3-14 overall, look to get a win after a two-loss road trip following their last home game versus Georgia Southwestern on Jan. 20.The AU women’s losing streak is now at 11 games, and they are looking for their first win since Dec. 17, when they defeated Young Harris at Christenberry Fieldhouse.Ashleigh Outler, a senior from Augusta, led the way with 19 points in the 98-48 loss at Lander on Jan.  27.
