By Erin Burditt |Sports writerThe Augusta University men’s and women’s track and field teams finished in first place and second place, respectively, in the Victor Ice Breaker Duals on Saturday, March 7, at Berry College in Rome, Ga.The AU men’s team has gotten off to a hot start as they have finished in first place in both meets to start off the spring season. At Berry, the men showcased their dominant running in the 5,000-meter event, as they took five of the six top spots overall.Junior Jacob Poston had another outstanding outing as he finished first out of all of the runners. Poston had a time of 14 minutes and 35.10 seconds, which establishes a new record for Augusta University.Augusta got a similar result in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as junior Hunter Kimball placed in first with a time of 9:34.92.In the 800-meter run, Poston finished in second place.The team of Andre Walker, Zatrick Pierce, Sean McCreay and Joshua Hewing finished the 4x100-meter relay in second place with a time of 40.46. This time breaks the previous AU record and qualified the foursome provisionally for the NCAA Championships. Pierce had a time of 49.59 in the 400 meters, good enough for a first-place finish.The AU women were led by freshman Priscilla Ajala and senior Edrei Yates. Ajala broke the school record in the 200 meters with a time of 25.43, and her time currently leads the Peach Belt Conference in that event. Yates finished in third in the 200 and placed first in the long jump with a 5.29-meter mark.Freshman Celene Stringer’s 9.54-meter mark got her third place in the triple jump event. With a time of 49.15 in the 4x100 relay, the team of Ajala, Yates, Jayla Ferris and Celene Stringer finished in second place.The men’s and women’s track and field teams are scheduled to compete in the Emory Invitational on Friday, March 20. All NCAA spring championships, though, have been cancelled, along with the men's and women's basketball tournaments at all three levels of competition.The Peach Belt Conference has yet to make a decision on the future of spring athletics. On its website, it states: "The Peach Belt Conference continues to monitor the situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The league has been in constant contact with our member institutions and the NCAA.
