NCAA basketball tournaments cancelled; Jaguars' season ends

Staff report |The NCAA cancelled its basketball tournaments for both men and women at all three levels on March 12.Therefore, the Augusta University men, who where traveling to Tennessee for this weekend's regional, will now not being facing Lander in the first round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional."We were driving through a tunnel in Tennessee when we received word that the NCAA tournament was canceled," AU Coach Dip Metress said. "I hate it for our players, program and University.  This was our 10th appearance in the NCAA tournament in the last 14 years and it goes without saying this was unprecedented in the world of college athletics.  Hopefully, this will motivate our three seniors next year: Jerod (Carrier), Shawn (Moss) and Troy (Cracknell) to inspire us to go back."Augusta ends the season with a 21-8 record and finished second in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament regular-season standings. The college hoops career of senior Rafael Monteiro also comes to end. Monteiro was named to the Peach Belt first team all-conference squad."Rafael’s work ethic as a student and player is the gold standard in our program," Metress said. "He lead us to two consecutive NCAA tournaments in his two years with us.  What he gave us in return to our program and university is a measuring stick for our players in the future."Metress finishes his 16th season as AU head coach with yet another 20-win season, his 10th for the Jaguars. Metress has 493 career victories and should surpass the 500-win milestone next season.
