By Meighan Coretti|Staff reporterA Tiger vs. Tiger face-off will commence in a fight for the national championship title between Clemson and LSU at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday, Jan. 13. While college football fans are not oblivious to the talent LSU has displayed this season, Clemson Tiger fans cannot deny their team’s abilities either.I believe it's fair to say that this game could quickly turn into a high-scoring event. LSU's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Joe Burrow, will be fighting against Clemson, the reigning national champions. As a reminder, in the 2019 ACC Championship, Clemson came back from a 16-0 first-quarter deficit to take the title and progress to the National Championship.Throughout Clemson’s season, we have seen the strength and dominance that is displayed through their defense. The main factor in how this game will unfold lies among Clemson and their defense. LSU didn't face many great passing defenses during this 2019 season. With Clemson’s defense ranked overall as number two, Joe Burrow’s offensive line will have to keep their defense from touching him and affecting his passing rate to his receivers downfield. On the flip side, Clemson’s offense, led by Trevor Lawrence, has proved time and time again how important they are in Clemson’s success. The talent within those golden locks is undeniable and has been seen on the field this whole season. His ability to read, take off with great speed and make a play happen when deemed necessary, as seen in his 67-yard touchdown run in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl, has proved to be vital. Clemson’s receivers will have to step up and make the necessary contested plays against LSU – something that wasn't seen much during their game against Ohio State, but can most certainly be done. LSU will have to find a way to break through Clemson’s offensive line and put pressure on Lawrence. While the crowd will most likely be pro-LSU for this game, the Clemson Tigers have been in this position before and are more than familiar with the atmosphere and the pressure that comes with playing in a National Championship – including the “noise” that comes from the opposing team’s fans. Despite the adversity both teams will have to face and overcome, Clemson has an upper hand on what it takes to be physically and mentally prepared for this game compared to LSU.I’m not selling LSU short, though. It will be a fantastic game on both sides to watch. However, I have a feeling that the defending national champions have what it takes to pull through and obtain the upper edge on LSU, even if it turns into a back-and-forth scoring shootout. When it’s all said and done, only time will tell which team will be named the “National Champions”.Are you ready to find out who the real Tigers are? Contact Meighan at MCORETTI@augusta.edu
