Augusta women ready for hoops season

By Cameron Windley |Sports writerAfter a successful open practice and a couple of scrimmages, the Augusta University women's basketball team is poised to open its season against Barton College in Central, S.C.Last season the Jaguars lost to Barton College 89-46, and they look for revenge this Friday (Nov. 8). Barton College is a liberal arts school in Wilson, N.C., and its women's team has had success against AU in the past. Barton College played really well last season against Augusta, according to Jaguar Coach Millette Green. The Jags want to make game one a statement and they want to show the Barton College Bulldogs that they’re ready for them. The jags have been practicing and preparing for weeks. There has been some bumps along the road especially with some of the freshmen. Some of the freshmen are still trying to get into the swing of college. The scrimmages have been up and down for the jags; some of the players that played well in the first game didn’t play well in the second game. In one of the scrimmages, Green only played freshmen and sophomores. The team has practiced 16-17 hours a week in the last month, and the Jaguars have already started watching film. They will go over plays in practice and will watch film before every game.Green understands this is a learning process and a long season ahead.“Mentally some of the players are there," Green said. "The freshmen are still trying to get there. We are constantly getting better and staying positive."An open practice at Christenberry Fieldhouse was attended by the Warren County High School program and several other high school players and coaches.“We had a good open practice, and people came to support and watch us" she said. The Jaguars will play their second game on Saturday, Nov. 9 against Southern Wesleyan, also in Central. Their first home game is Saturday, Nov. 16 against Queens at 5:30 p.m. Contact Cameron Windley at cwindley@augusta.edu.
