By Ravyn Chatmon |Online editorStudents, faculty and staff gathered in the Multicultural Student Center at Augusta University Monday, Oct. 21, to host a sit-in and protest the termination of Karen Mobley, director of Multicultural Student Engagement. Mobley received a letter of discharge Tuesday, Oct. 15, from Scott Wallace, assistant vice president and dean of students. This came as a shock to Mobley and to the many students of whom she has impacted during her career at AU."She has been a strong supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I've seen the change here because of her. To terminate her doesn't make sense," said AU student Joseph Wallace.Mobley was heavily involved in the student organization Lambda Alliance, a gay-straight alliance that is open to both the students of Augusta University and members of the LGBTQ+ community. She is also the creator of Sista Circle, a discussion group made to empower and inspire Black women to own their identity while navigating the common issues that they face. She also took part in The Black Male Handbook, a discussion panel on how Black male students can succeed in college and in life.Many students have found themselves emotional and concerned about who will fill Mobley’s position if she doesn’t return.“Whoever comes into this position will be met with some very high expectations,” said Lambda Alliance President and AU student Samira Pilgreen.Another protest is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 22 in front of Bellevue Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.Karen Mobley served as the director of academic diversity initiatives in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion before being appointed to lead the Office of Multicultural Student Engagement last year.
