AU athletics update: Volleyball team wins league opener

Staff reportThe Augusta University volleyball team opened the Peach Belt Conference campaign with a 3-2 win at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., on Oct. 4.The Jaguars (1-0, 12-3) won 25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 15-25, 15-11. Coach Sharon Quarles' team was led by Nicolette Ramos with 17 kills and Kylie Martin with 15 kills and 10 digs.AU hits the road on Oct. 11-12 for regional crossover matches. The road trip starts with Lenoir-Rhyne and Mars Hill on Oct. 11 in Mars Hill, N.C., followed by Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial in Jefferson City, Tenn., on Oct. 12.Ramos was named Peach Belt Conference volleyball player of the week on Oct. 1, and Martin took the same award on Sept. 24.The AU cross country teams are now training for the Peach Belt Conference championships to be held on Oct. 26 in Pembroke, N.C. The men are coming off victory in the Queen City Invite, and women's standout Micah Weathers won the individual title in that event.The Jaguar men's golf team finished sixth in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C., on Oct. 6. Freshman Ben van Wyck led the way with a 212 score for the 54-hole event, good for 12th place overall. Hampus Wijlkstrom shot 3 under par for the final round to finish at 218. He tied teammate Gustav Andersson in 26th place.The AU women's golf team finished seventh in the Illini Invitational at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill. Linda Lundqvist was first for Augusta with a 213 total for 54 holes, including a 69 on the final round. The Jaguars' next tournament will be Nov. 1-3 at San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, for the Battle at the Beach. The event is hosted by TCU.The Augusta men's basketball team will host an open practice on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.Update: The AU volleyball team defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 3-0 on the start of the regional crossover weekend. Malloch Madison led the way for the Jaguars with 16 kills. Nicolette Ramos added 11. Payton Murchie had 19 assists. Set scores were 25-21, 26-24, 25-19. In the nightcap, AU (14-3) beat Mars Hill 3-1 with set scores of 17-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-22. Ramos had 14 kills, Kylie Martin 13 and Madison 12. Chole Allen had 16 digs, and Martin totaled 15. On Saturday, the Jags split their two matches. They lost to Carson-Newman 3-1 and defeated Lincoln Memorial 3-2. Murchie had 26 assists and 10 digs in the win over Lincoln. Kassie Till had 15 assists and 10 digs. AU hosts  Queens on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.
