Metress has noteworthy recruiting class for AU men's hoops

By Tyvez Monroe |Sports writerComing off a championship season that saw AU Coach Dip Metress lose three seniors, including Peach Belt Player of the Year Deane Williams (now playing professionally for Keflavík Icelandic Basketball Club), the veteran coach had a busy offseason replenishing his squad.Starting off with 7-foot, 290-pound Tyshaun Crawford from Griffin, Metress has a strong group of newcomers for the Jaguar men's basketball team. Crawford’s a lefty with tremendous skill and touch around the basket. The Georgia Southern transfer can also run up and down the floor. Most people with that weight have a hard time staying in shape. The sky is the limit for Crawford because being 7-feet tall makes him an automatic weapon.Lee Flenor is a lanky wing player with amazing leaping ability and potential to be a good player at AU. He’s a 6-7 freshman from Miami, Fla. He has the chance to be a great defender for the Jags because of his wingspan and quickness.Transitioning out of the country, there are two recruits who made their way to AU.First there is Gabiel Moller, a point guard from Iceland. He is 6-foot and weighs 175 pounds. He was recruited to be a point guard who runs and controls the team. When asking Moller how he will fit into the team, he responded: “I make everyone better.”Anthony Torelli is a shooting guard from Toronto, Canada. He is 6-4 and weighs 192 pounds. Torelli has an all-around game and will have an instant impact for the Jags on the offensive end. He can shoot the ball well from all three layers of the court; he can dribble, and his basketball IQ is high.AU, 28-6 last season and winner of both the Peach Belt regular-season and conference tourney titles and a regional finalist, has the potential to have yet another outstanding season. It’s all up to the returning players to lead the way and the recruits to follow their lead. Rafael Monteiro returns in the post, and a group of guards return on the perimeter, including Tyree Myers, Miguel Arnold and Darren Lucas-White. Another key contributor last season was forward Troy Cracknell, who adds another strong perimeter shooter to the mix. Also returning are Robert Barlund, Shawn Moss, Jerod Carrier and Jack Johnson (who redshirted last season). The returnees can come together and make another special season happen, with an assist from the newcomers. The Jaguars open the season Nov. 8 against Mt. Olive in Wilson, N.C. Contact Tyvez Monroe at TMONROE@augusta.edu.
