By Sarah Tychsen |Sports editorThe Augusta University women’s golf team recently completed a satisfying 2018-19 campaign. The Jaguar women qualified for the NCAA Division I regional, which took place in East Lansing, Mich., May 6-8, at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Jaguars, who were ranked 45th in the nation at the end of the regular season and earned at-large berth in the regional, got off to a solid start in the opening holes, but despite some challenges the Jaguars finished the first round at 14-over-par with a score of 302 in stroke play. At that point, AU was tied for 11th. The best score on the first day was carded by senior Cecelia Diez-Moliner with a 1-over-par 73.On the second day, inclement weather pushed the tee times back to 2:45 p.m. Despite the delay, the Jaguars managed to move into 10th position by finishing the second round at 9-over-par 297. The best score of the day belonged to junior Linda Lundqvist, who shot an even-par 72.With a move into 10th position, the Jaguars had every intention of working their way into the top six to claim a spot into the NCAA Nationals. The final day was challenging and despite their every effort to pursue nationals, their hopes of achieving this was not met. The Jaguars finished the regional with a 24-over-par 312. AU ended its season with a tie for 14th place out of 18 teams at the regionals and a 911 total score. Kent State University captured the regional champion. The Augusta team has grown a lot this year, both on and off of the golf course. Despite not being as successful as they had hoped to be at the regional, the players know what they have to work on for the fall tournaments after returning from summer break.“I hold myself to expectations every day," AU Coach Caroline Hegg said. "I wake up and go to sleep thinking about my team and how we can get better. I want to find ways to make my team elevate their thinking and confidence. Competitiveness drives me to want to be a better coach, recruiter and motivator."Under Hegg, the Jaguars have made the regional three times in her four years as AU's coach. Overall, Augusta has now made the regionals eight times in the 18-year history of the program. The highlight of the season was finishing second in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens. AU lost to 12th-ranked South Carolina in the final of that tourney in April. Contact Sarah Tychsen at STYCHSEN@augusta.edu.
