The Sports Squad Report: Jaguar men's XC team advances to second straight NCAAs

Edited by Leeroy Francis Jr. |Sports editorThe Sports Squad PodcastThe Augusta University men’s cross country team took third place in the  NCAA Southeast Regional Saturday, Nov. 17th at the University of North Georgia and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the second straight season and third time in school history. Hunter Kimball finished sixth in the regional and Noah Hulett seventh. Jacob Poston was 18th. The AU women finished 10th in the regional. McKenzie Knudsen was 21st overall for the Jags' top finish. In other sports news …

  • The AU volleyball team lost in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Southeast Regional to Georgia College 3-1. The No. 3 seed Jaguars and No. 6 seed  Bobcats met for the fourth time this season. After AU won the first set 25-20, the Bobcats took the next three sets to advance to the second round and eliminate the Jaguars. McKenzey Beck posted her ninth triple-double of the season with 14 kills, 13 assists, and 12 digs for Augusta. She finishes her two-year career at AU with 21 triple-doubles.   • The AU men's and women's basketball teams both defeated Paine College in a renewal of the City Classic at the HEAL Complex on Nov. 17. In the men's game, AU was led by senior Tyvez Monroe and junior transfer Rafael Monteiro, and the Jaguars (2-1) defeated the Lions 64-62 in a back-and-forth game. After two Paine free throws tied the game at 62 in the final minute, Tyree Myers, the freshman from Baltimore, Md., hit a contested left-handed layup with only 15 seconds left, and, in the ensuing possession, Paine (0-2) could not attempt a clean shot to potentially send the game into overtime or win it. Monroe had 15 points, and Monteiro had 14 points, 11 rebounds and took four charges. Jaguars' coach Dip Metress is now 16-1 all-time against Paine ...
  • In the women's game, the Jaguars defeated Paine  69-52 for their first win of the 2018-19 season. Freshman Asia Harrison and senior Moneisha Goldsborough each had 14 points for the Jaguars, who went wire-to-wire to move to (1-2) on the season. The men and women will host the first doubleheader of the season Wednesday, Nov. 21, against Benedict College at Christenberry Fieldhouse.   • Patrick Reed finished tied for second in the European Tour's season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. England's Danny Willett was the tourney winner at 18 under par. Reed, the Masters champion and former AU student, tied Matt Wallace of England at 16 under. Reed ended the season second behind British Open champion Francesco Molinari for the Order of Merit on the European Tour ...
  • The Georgia Bulldogs' football team had another dominating performance in Week 12, defeating the University of Massachusetts  66-27. The latest college playoff rankings will keep the top six in place with Alabama at No. 1,  Clemson (which routed Duke) at No. 2, Notre Dame No. 3 and Michigan No. 4. No. 5 Georgia and No. 6 Oklahoma are on the outside looking in. Ohio State survived Maryland in overtime, and Washington State routed Arizona to keep their playoff bids alive. Meanwhile, West Virginia is out of the playoff picture after a crushing loss at Oklahoma State. In other football action, Georgia Tech moved to 7-4 after a 1-3 start to the season with a 30-27 overtime win over Virginia at Grant Field in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets, who saw the Cavs miss a field goal that would have tied the game at the end of the first OT, will play the Bulldogs at Sanford Stadium in Athens next Saturday.   • The Seattle Seahawks came back from a 14-3 early deficit to defeat the Green Bay Packers 27-24 in Seattle to keep their 2018 playoff hopes alive in a "must-win" game. After a 15-yard go-ahead touchdown pass from Russell Wilson to Ed Dickson that put the Seahawks up three with just over five minutes remaining. On the Packers' following drive they faced a fourth-and-two from their own 33-yard line with a little over four minutes left in the game and only one timeout remaining. Packers' coach Mike McCarthy decided to punt the ball away to the Seahawks, a heavily scrutinized decision wherein following the Packers never received the ball again as the Seahawks ran out the clock on the game ...

  • North Augusta's Tanner White accounted for five touchdowns as the eighth-ranked Yellow Jackets rolled over Colleton County 49-14 in the second round of the Class AAAA Lower State playoffs Friday night in North Augusta. the Yellow Jackets have won six in a row and will play at top-ranked Hartsville Friday, Nov. 23 in the Class AAAA South Carolina playoffs. Meanwhile, Augusta's Aquinas lost at Darlington 28-12 to end its season. Thomson lost to Cairo 38-14 in the AAAA second round.
