Jaguars' VB team earns 13th shutout victory of the season

By Ceara Hester |Staff WriterAfter beating Francis Marion 3-1 on Friday, Oct. 26, Augusta University’s volleyball team earned another win against UNC Pembroke on Saturday, Oct. 27, giving them their 13th shutout win of the season. The Lady Jags improved 20-5 overall and 6-3 in the league, and they are ranked third in the NCAA Southeast Region behind Wingate and USC Aiken.Friday night was AU’s annual Pink Out match to raise awareness and support the Georgia Cancer Center. AU raised $1,800  for the center.After winning the first set 25-22 and losing the second set 25-23, the Jaguars won the last two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-19.Augusta’s seniors were recognized during Senior Day on Saturday. McKenzey Beck, Savanna Gonzales, Nathalia Gouveia and Blair Bolton received plaques and had their accomplishments read aloud to the crowd of family, friends and fans. After recognizing each player, the gym was filled with the accompaniment of the Brazilian national anthem to show love to Gouveia, a Brazilian native.“It is a great but sad moment to see four years go by so quickly and see how much they’ve grown and gotten so much better since the first day they walked in the door," Jaguar Coach Sharon Quarles said about her senior players. "Now to say goodbye to them is kind of hard."The seniors and their teammates won an easy 3-0 match against Pembroke. Set scores were 25-17, 25-13 and 25-9 with hitting percentages of .421, .333 and .522 for AU and .182, -.100 and -.086 for the Braves. Augusta had a total of 42 kills and five errors while UNC Pembroke made 26 kills with 24 errors. Gonzales led the match with nine kills and junior setter Cheryke Brian-Garmos had a match-high 16 assists to help lead the team to another victory.Every player was able to get out on the court against the Braves. The Jags were excited to be able to play with all of their teammates, especially since the season is coming to an end.The final home match of the season will be Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. against Queens University of Charlotte, N.C. While Beck does not want to think about her last home match as a Jaguar, Bolton has high hopes.“I’m looking forward to it,” Bolton said. “We’re a strong team. I mean, Queens, they’re also a strong team, but it will be a fight. Every game is a fight, and we’re looking forward to it.”Update: AU defeated Queens on Tuesday, Oct. 30, by a score of 3-1. The Jags improved to 21-5 overall. Set scores were 32-30, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-18.
