The Sports Squad report: Augusta recognizes​ basketball legend Larry Carlson

He was recognized for 50 years in basketball. He began coaching at the university in 1968, alongside Marvin Vanover. The second stint was between 1977-81, and he returned as a volunteer assistant for current coach Dip Metress in 2006 through 2018. “He showed up every day and never asked for a dime,” Metress said. “We’ll never be able to repay what he did for us. Loyalty is not a big thing that happens in today’s society, but he’s a loyal person to me and to our university.” In other sports news this week:

  • The NBA season opened on Oct. 16 with the defending champion Golden State Warriors and runners-up Boston Celtics getting opening-night victories. The much anticipated opening of the LeBron James era in Los Angeles got off to a bit of a fizzling start as the Lakers lost at Portland, 128-119. James had 26 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Damian Lillard paced Portland with 28 points, and reserve Nik Stauskas added 24. The Blazers won their 18th straight home opener to extend an NBA record. It was the Blazers' 16th straight victory over the Lakers.
