Jaguars’ VB team improves to 6-1 after Queens Fall Classic

By Ceara Hester |ContributorAugusta University’s volleyball team played four matches at the Queens Fall Classic tournament in Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 1-2. The Lady Jaguars took on Anderson and Winston-Salem State Friday afternoon and Wingate and Barton on Saturday.The Jags maintained their winning streak after beating both Anderson and Winston-Salem with 3-0 sets. They beat Anderson with scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-23 with a hitting average of .271 versus the Trojans’ .079. They ended the first day of the tournament with their fifth match win after beating Winston-Salem State 25-13, 25-12, 25-15.Junior setter Cheryke Brian-Garmos led the team in assists in both matches with a combined total of 33. Senior outside hitter Savanna Gonzales had a combined total of 22 kills and sophomore defensive specialist Holland Martin gave the team a total of 36 digs.Saturday morning, AU saw its winning streak came to an end against Wingate. The match lasted four sets after each team pulled out a win in the first two. However, it was Augusta that took the losses in the final two sets. Final scores were 25-20, 17-25, 25-15, and 25-16. Senior setter McKenzey Beck led the team with eight kills, nine assists and nine digs, while junior middle blocker Jessica Hedrick was right behind her with seven kills and four assisted blocks.“It was still a solid match played,” said AU Coach Sharon Quarles. “It provided some insight on things we definitely still need to tackle. Just when pushed we need to push back without let up against a tough team like that,” she said.The final match for the Lady Jags was against Barton. The team took home another 3-0 match win with final scores of 25-13, 25-16, and 25-15. Gonzales had seven kills and a .500 hitting average while Beck contributed 16 assists and six digs to the Jags. Both Gonzales and Beck were named to the 2018 Queens Fall Classic All-Tournament Team after playing this weekend.The previous weekend, AU hosted its annual Jaguar Rumble tournament and swept through each set without a single loss. The coach and her players have high expectations after being voted third in the volleyball Peach Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll and Beck being named PBC Preseason All-Conference. The Jags played Albany State, Mount Olive, and Montevallo. Their toughest set came when they played Montevallo and were down 23-24 before fighting back and winning the set 26-24. AU had their highest hitting average of .556 after playing Mount Olive in the second set. Beck made her first triple-double of the season, in which she led the nation in last season with 12, with 16 assists, 10 digs and 10 kills while playing against Montevallo.The Jaguars are set to play their next match at the Christenberry Fieldhouse today (Sept. 4) at 7 p.m. against Shorter. AU volleyball fans can support the team by eating at Panda Express on Robert C.
