New Georgia Project gives AU students help with voter registration

By Chris Hutchins |Staff Writer / PhotographerMembers of the New Georgia Project visited Augusta University’s Summerville campus on Monday, Aug. 20, registering students to vote. The New Georgia Project (NGP) placed several tables around campus near both the Science Hall and Allgood Hall. The group’s members were handing out buttons and pamphlets while engaging with students and asking them if they were registered to vote.If students were not registered to vote, the visitors helped them fill out the necessary paperwork so that they could be registered to vote in Georgia. The next election is on Nov. 6. Major races include those for governor and U.S. House of Representatives.NGP members Frank Williams and Tianna Brown spoke with the Bell Ringer about the group’s mission statement, “Register, Engage, and Advocate.” Their goal at AU was to register a new generation of voters and help them to get involved in politics.Williams believes that the new generation of voters will make a big impact on future elections, whether they are national or local and state elections.“Since 2016, we have seen a large increase in young voters, aged 18 to 25,” he said. “I think this will make a significant difference not only on the presidential elections but also the local and state-level elections.”Brown said that she joined the Atlanta-based NGP because of the outreach opportunities and that she firmly believes change is only possible if citizens work for reforms.Link to New Georgia Project Website:NGP website: http://newgeorgiaproject.orgFor more information contact Chris Hutchins at chhutchins@augusta.edu
