Augusta University senior Hans Troyer opened the 2023 Peach Belt Conference track and field championships with a narrow victory over teammate Avery Jaynes in the 10,000-meter final in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Thursday, April 20.

Troyer won the 10-kilometer race in 32 minutes and 5.62 seconds. Jaynes, a sophomore, was right on his heels in 32:06.19—a .57 of a second differential. Joel Nesi of Flagler was third in 32:07.03.

“It was definitely a tactical race,” Jaynes said. “Hans and I both just sat back and followed the pack. When coach (Jacob Burgamy) told us to make the move, we did, and we raced exactly how we wanted to.”

The Jaguars had five runners in the top eight in the event. Tripp Miller was sixth in 32:12.24, followed by Thomas Rischar in seventh in 32:27.03 and Carlos Rodriguez in eighth in 32:29.95.
