Ting, AU in second place in Southland championship tournament

Staff report

Led by freshman Mirabel Ting, the Augusta University women’s golf team moved within five shots of the lead in the Southland Conference tournament championship in San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday, April 18.

The Jaguars started the day in third place and 11 shots behind Houston Christian, but Augusta by-passed the Huskies, who slumped to a 312 total after shooting 304 on the first day at the Hill Country Resort Golf Club.

The Ting-led Jaguars shot 299 in the second round to move to 36 over par as a team.

AU trailed Incarnate Word by five shots through 36 holes. The Cardinals, who were in second place after the first day, moved into first with a 297 for the second 18 holes. They are 607 for the tournament, with AU at 612.

Ting led all players with a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday. She sits three shots behind individual leader Alex Giles of Incarnate Word. Ting was the only player in the field to make an eagle in the second round.

“Mirabel got really hot over the final four holes today,” said AU Coach Caroline Hegg. “She had struggled to make putts up to that point, but stayed patient and took advantage of good opportunities.”

Hegg said Ting needs to let the golf come to her in the final round.

“This layout will favor patient, well-executed golf shots,” the Jaguar coach said. “If she hits a lot of fairways and greens, she will be in contention.”

Ting’s teammate Victoria Zheng, also a freshman, shot a 74 and is tied for sixth. AU senior Napabhach Boon-In shot a 75 and is tied for eighth.

The final round will be played Wednesday. Ting will tee off with the last group, which includes Giles and Lou Rousselot of Houston Christian, who will start at 10:20 a.m. (CDT).
