The TVC Lab: A hidden gem at Augusta University

The TVC Lab: A hidden gem at Augusta University

By Andrew Chalker | Staff Writer

For aspiring filmmakers, news anchors, podcast hosts, etc, the TVC Lab located in University Hall is one of the greatest resources available for students. If you’re majoring in communications, then you’ve likely taken more than one class in the TVC Lab, but you may not realize just how beneficial something like this can be.

Being well versed in all things production is something employers look for. The more versatile you are, the better. Cody Robertson works as the lab assistant for the TVC Lab and he says that it “is an extremely valuable resource that communication students can use for free. This will give you a big advantage over people who do not have access to these sorts of resources.”

The lab is equipped with a newsroom and a news desk previously used by WRDW News 12 and gifted to Augusta University by Estelle Parsley, a veteran of the industry and the current newsroom manager of the station. When you sit behind the desk to do your anchor reads, just know that it has seen some action!

Another thing the lab has to offer is a working control room which is used for newscasts and any other projects students may have. Not only can you get experience in front of the camera, but you can also get just as much practice with all things behind the scenes.

If video and broadcasting isn’t your forte, the lab also has two podcasting rooms. One of the rooms is equipped with four microphones, four headphones, soundproof walls, and a timer so you can make sure you are staying focused. The other room is the control room for podcasting. This room features a computer setup with the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite of products which includes Adobe Audition (the industry standard for audio production), speakers to monitor your hosts and guests, and access to all different kinds of audio equipment at your disposal.

One thing to note is that many students might not be aware of where the lab is located. As a student myself, I’ve witnessed countless people over the past few semesters asking for the location. For those who may be confused, the TVC Lab is located in University Hall, Room 171. Cody says, “it’s the first door on the left after you walk in from the eastern parking lot.” Surprisingly, the lab is very easy to overlook, as many people who walk through the eastern entrance aren’t always paying attention to what is immediately to their left.

In short, the TVC Lab is an incredible resource for students who want to get some hands on experience in the world of production and broadcasting. The versatility that it offers is extraordinarily helpful in terms of experience and resume building. Another important factor to remember is that you don’t have to be actively in any class that utilizes the TVC Lab to use it. The only requirements are that you are a student here at Augusta University and that you make an appointment first.

For any further questions or concerns about the lab, you can email TVC & Audio Lab Supervisor Jasmine Garcia at TVC_Lab@augusta.edu.
